The Best time to start

THE FORTIES

Your Skin In Your forties

Your 40s are when most women first notice that their skin is behaving differently. Cell turnover slows. Collagen production, which has been declining since your late 20s, starts to show its effects more visibly. Fine lines begin to settle in rather than disappear overnight. The skin's ability to hold moisture reduces. Texture becomes less even. The glow that used to come without effort needs a little more support.

For many women, the brows start to thin in this decade too. A change that can feel surprisingly significant when it happens.

Hormonally, your 40s can bring perimenopause (the years leading up to menopause) which affects the skin in ways that are often unexpected and confusing. Products that worked for years may stop performing. Skin that was combination or oily may become drier. Sensitivity can increase.

The good news is that your 40s are genuinely the best decade to start addressing these changes. The skin still responds quickly and well to treatment. Prevention at this stage is far more effective than restoration later.

What I see most often

The things women in their 40s tell me are bothering them.

Fine lines start to stay

Lines around the eyes, between the brows, and across the forehead that used to disappear overnight are starting to settle. They're not deep yet but they're there.

Skin that's lost its glow

The brightness and even tone that came naturally in your 30s needs more support now. Dullness, uneven texture, and a general flatness to the complexion are common complaints in this decade.

Brows starting to thin

Many women first notice brow thinning in their 40s, particularly if they over plucked in earlier years. It's subtle at first, but it changes how the face reads. Addressing it early is far simpler than waiting.

Skin that feels different

Hormonal shifts in your 40s affect everything. Hydration, sensitivity, texture, and how the skin responds to products. If your skin has changed and you're not sure why, that’s usually the reason.

You don't want to overdo it

Women in their 40s are often cautious and rightly so. You don't want dramatic results. You want to maintain what you have and address what's starting to change. That is exactly the kind of work I do best.

I look more tired

The first signs of muscle-related tiredness in the face. A slight heaviness in the forehead. Lines between the brows that make you look tense. These often appear in this decade.

Recommended Treatments

I won't recommend a treatment I don't believe in. These are the ones I reach for most often with clients in their 40s because they work, they're appropriate for this stage, and the results are genuinely meaningful.

Medik8 Expert Facial

The best place to start. A fully bespoke facial built entirely around your skin on the day, assessing your skin type, concerns, and how it's changing, then treating it with the right combination of Medik8 actives. In your 40s this typically means hydration, brightening, and barrier support. Regular appointments at this stage make a compounding difference over time.

Medik8 Crystal Retinal Age-Defying Facial

Crystal Retinal is one of the most effective ingredients available for skin renewal, a next-generation form of vitamin A that improves skin tone, texture, and firmness. Starting this treatment in your 40s, before significant changes have taken hold, gives you the best possible results. Prevention through consistency is the most effective skincare strategy at this stage.

£97

Signature Glow HydraFacial

A treatment that deeply cleanses, exfoliates, and hydrates in a single session. Particularly effective for skin that is starting to change in texture or lose its brightness. Results are immediately visible. Skin looks clearer, smoother, and more radiant after just one appointment.

£97

BioRePeel

An advanced chemical peel with minimal downtime, improving skin texture, tone, and radiance. Particularly effective for the beginning signs of pigmentation, uneven texture, and dullness that start to appear in this decade. Can be done year round and combined with other treatments for a more comprehensive result.

From £87

Seventy Hyal Skin Booster

A next-generation skin booster that stimulates new collagen production alongside deep hydration, improving texture, reducing laxity, and restoring a natural glow. Three sessions, three weeks apart.

£125 per session

Anti-wrinkle injections

In your 40s, anti-wrinkle injections are about prevention as much as correction. Relaxing the muscles responsible for frown lines, forehead lines, and crow's feet at this stage keeps those lines from becoming more deeply set. I always approach this conservatively. The goal is to look like yourself.

A note from Nikki

I see it every week. Women who started coming to me in their 40s, for regular facials, a course of microneedling, early anti-wrinkle treatment, who are now in their 50s and 60s and whose skin is in genuinely remarkable condition. Not because they've had dramatic work done. Because they started early and kept going.

Your 40s are not too early. They are exactly the right time. And the treatments don't need to be intensive or expensive to make a real difference. Consistency is what counts.

If you're not sure where to start, that's what the Restore & Refresh consultation is for. I'll assess your skin, talk through your concerns, and tell you honestly what's worth doing now and what can wait.

I'll look at your face, listen to what's bothering you, and give you an honest opinion on what will (and won't) make a difference. You can rely on a straightforward conversation with someone who will tell you the truth.

You don't need to know what you need.
